GOES Band 16
GOES Band 16 is the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) weather satellite sensor that detects the presence of CO2 in Earth's sky from outer space looking down at Earth. The sensor is illustrating the presence of CO2 in Earth's sky typically where larger storms occur in upper altitudes. During processing the CO2 is assigned various shades of yellow to brown color to illustrate temperature variations detected by the longwave infrared satellite sensor. White is usually clouds, and blue is typically the Earth's sky without the presence of CO2. An outline of the continents and islands are added during processing
A legend just below the images, available from the main page, shows the relative temperature variations in Centigrade (C). To convert from Centigrade to Fahrenheit multiply the temperature times 2 and then add 32;
for example if the temperature is 30 degrees C then multiply 30 by 2 and add 32: 30 x 2 + 32 = 92 degrees Fahrenheit.
Movement of the image is a loop of 12 consecutive frames to illustrate that the CO2 is not stationary, but actually moving with the wind and storms. The image to the right on this page, is from December 22, 2022 to show that CO2 has been present longer than the current images provided on the main page of this website.
